UCLA Falls To No. 8/10 Arizona State On Senior Day

Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 8/10 Arizona State broke open a close game in the second half, defeating UCLA, 80-69, in the Bruins' home finale at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. Sun Devil guard Briann January scored a career-high 22 points to lead all players. UCLA senior guard Noelle Quinn scored a Bruin-best 20 points in the loss.
Arizona State, now 25-3, 15-2 in the Pac-10 Conference, went on a 16-3 run in the middle stages of the second half to create some separation from the Bruins. The Sun Devils enjoyed a 41-36 lead with 15:37 on the clock when it started the run on a Kayli Murphy basket. After Kirsten Thompson's bucket with 10:02 to play, ASU had lengthened its margin to 18 points, 57-39. Quinn broke the run with the 9:39 remaining when she scored UCLA's first basket from the field since the 16:02 mark. Arizona State maintained its double digit lead through the balance of the game. The Bruins closed to within 10 points, 79-69, in the final seconds.
UCLA seniors Quinn, Amanda Livingston, Shaina Zaidi, Julia Pitts and Consuelo Lezcano closed the game together on the court. All five seniors scored - Quinn with 20, Livingston with 8, Zaidi with 3, Pitts with 2 and Lezcano with a career-high tying nine points and a new career-best of six rebounds. Quinn moved up into sixth place on the all-time scoring list at UCLA with a current total of 1,754 points. Bruin sophomore center Chinyere Ibekwe led all players with 11 rebounds.
The Bruins, now 13-15, 7-9, will close out the regular season with a trip to the Bay Area. UCLA meets Stanford on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. before playing at California on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.
