Jayne Appel Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Feb. 19, 2007
STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman forward Jayne Appel (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18, as announced today by Commissioner Tom Hansen.
For the week, Appel averaged 23.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 2.0 steals, solidifying her status as one of the premier post players in the conference. On the week, she shot 55.2-percent from the field (21-38) and 50.0 percent (4-8) from the foul line as the Cardinal defeated Oregon State 70-55 and Oregon 74-56 on the road.
Appel's honor is the third for a Cardinal player this year, with Candice Wiggins having captured the award twice (Jan. 1 and Jan. 29).
With injuries at the guard position, Appel took advantage of an increased number of touches down low and notched two double-doubles. Against Oregon State on Thursday, Appel posted career-highs of 28 points and 17 rebounds in 33 minutes during Stanford's 70-55 victory. The 17 rebounds were the most by any Cardinal player this year.
Two days later at Oregon, she was just as effective while displaying another dimension to her game. Her third double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds was impressive, but she also established career-bests with seven assists and three steals. Throw in her team-best 47th blocked shot of the year and Appel is inching closer to the single-season school record of 58 blocked shots.
For the season, Appel ranks third on the club in scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg). She is shooting a team-high 55.2 percent from the field and has scored in double-figures 17 times. Appel has played in 26 games, all off the bench.
Stanford (23-4 overall, 15-1 Pac-10) will host UCLA on Thurs., Feb. 22 and USC on Sun., Feb. 25 and can clinch at least a share of the Pac-10 title with a win against the Bruins.
