No. 15 UCLA Baseball Falls to No. 20 Long Beach State, 14-1

Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman left-hander Matt Drummond allowed just three hits in 4.0 scoreless innings in his first collegiate appearance as No. 15 UCLA fell to No. 20 Long Beach State, 14-1, in a non-conference matchup at Blair Field Tuesday evening. Four Long Beach State pitchers limited the Bruins to one run off four hits.
The Dirtbags used a three-run fifth, a three-run sixth and a eight-run eighth inning. Long Beach State took a 3-0 lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on base, senior A.J. Pinocchio blooped a single to left, bringing home Matt Cline. Robert Perry and A.J. Pinocchio scored on back-to-back wild pitches by freshman J.D. Haver. Freshman left-hander Justin Uribe was charged with all three runs in 0.2 innings pitched.
Long Beach State added three runs in the sixth to lead 6-1. With shortstop Danny Espinosa at third and pinch-runner Jason Tweedy at first, Brandon Godfrey sent a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Espinosa. The Dirtbags added their fifth run when left-handed pitcher Paul Schmidt's throw to first on a high-bouncer pulled Tim Stewart off the bag, allowing Tweedy to score from third. With the bases loaded, Steve Tinoco drew a walk, scoring Howell.
The Dirtbags tallied eight runs off six singles, two walks and two hit batters in the eighth inning to assume a 14-1 lead. Long Beach State right-hander Andre Lamontagne pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one hit while striking out a career-high six batters.
UCLA opens a three-game series at No. 10 Cal State Fullerton (7-2) on Friday, Feb. 23. The Bruins and Titans play Saturday (6 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Haver pitched before his hometown audience - Long Beach State's Blair Field is located directly across the street from his alma mater, Long Beach Wilson High School.
