WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA junior Susie Babos has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Babos, the reigning NCAA Singles Champion currently ranked third in the nation, scored two straight-set wins over two of the Pac-10's top competitors last week in two statement wins for the Golden Bears over No. 15 UCLA and No. 5 USC.
Playing at home in Berkeley, Cal swept the Bruins 7-0 on Friday, highlighted by Babos' 7-5, 7-5 win over 35th-ranked Riza Zalameda, last week's Player of the Week selection.
Saturday, California pulled the upset over the Women of Troy, 5-2, with Babos earning another big win over USC's Lindsey Nelson at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-1, 6-2.
Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor, ranked No. 2 in doubles, registered a pair of doubles wins as well, defeating UCLA's Zalameda and Lin, 8-4 on Saturday, and USC's Nelson and Smekodub, 8-6 on Sunday. The pair are 7-1 in dual play this season.
Babos' overall singles record stands at 18-5 this season, highlighted by her victory in the ITA All-American Championships in the fall, the second-straight major she captured after winning last spring's NCAA title.
