Feb. 21, 2007
BERKELEY - Junior Susie Babos, the reigning NCAA singles champion, has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The All-American garnered two straight-set victories over two top Pac-10 competitors last weekend, as the No. 7 California women's tennis team claimed two big wins over No. 15 UCLA and No. 8 USC.
Babos defeated last week's Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week, Riza Zalameda of UCLA, 7-5, 7-5. The next day, in a rematch of the 2006 NCAA singles final, Babos once again beat USC's Lindsey Nelsen, 6-1, 6-2. Both wins came on the No. 1 court. The Hungarian, ranked fifth in the ITA singles rankings, currently posts a singles record of 18-5, including her singles title in the ITA All-American Championships last fall.
In doubles, Babos also picked up two big wins with senior Zsuzsanna Fodor. The fourth-ranked Golden Bear doubles team beat Zalameda and Tracy Lin of UCLA, 8-4, on Friday and USC's Nelson and Julie Smekodub, 8-6, on Saturday. The pair is 7-1 in dual play this season.
The other nominees were: Danielle Steinberg, ARIZ; Rebecca Rankin, ASU; Jessica Nguyen, STAN, Sarah Fansler, USC; Marjolein van de Ven, WSU.
The Bears (6-2) head to the desert this weekend to square off against Arizona on Friday, Feb. 23, and Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 24, in two non-conference dual matches.
