Kate Benz Grabs WSU's All-Time Career Rebound Title
Feb. 22, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior forward Kate Benz became WSU's all-time career rebound leader Thursday as she recorded 11 rebounds to take over the top spot in the record books. WSU (5-22, 1-16 Pac-10) lost to Oregon (16-11, 8-9 Pac-10) by a score of 51-34 at Beasley Coliseum.
Benz needed five rebounds to break the record of 875 career rebounds held by Cassandra Overby, a Cougar from 1981-1984. With the 11 boards she posted Thursday, Benz cleared Overby's original record and now owns 882 career rebounds with two games remaining. It was the first double-digit rebound effort for Benz since Jan. 6 when she finished with 12 rebounds against Arizona.
The 6-foot-2 forward finished with three points to bring her career points total to 985. Benz needs only 15 points to become the 11th member of WSU's elite 1,000 point club and would become only the second player in Cougar women's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points and 800 career rebounds. The only other person to have accomplished this feat is Cassandra Overby.
For Oregon, Cicely Oaks posted 12 points while Eleanor Haring added 11. Kaela Chapdelaine had eight rebounds.
The Cougars held the Ducks to a mere 19 points in the first half, marking the second lowest first half point total by a WSU opponent this season. WSU held California to 17 points in the first period Jan. 11.
WSU outrebounded Oregon 40-39, including a 17-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Cougars also recorded six steals versus two by the Ducks.
WSU faces Oregon State as they attempt a season sweep over the Beavers. The Cougars defeated OSU in the first Pac-10 game of the season Dec. 21. The Cougars and the Beavers tip-off at 1:00 p.m. in a game televised by FSN. Nikki Stratton, Adriane Ferguson and Kate Benz will be honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.
