No. 8/11 Stanford Slips By Florida International

Miami, Fla. - The No. 8/11 Stanford softball team opened the FIU/Adidas Invitational tonight with a 1-0 win over host FloridaInternational at University Park in Miami, Fla. Sophomore pitcher Missy Penna tallied 14 strikeouts and collectedher fourth shutout of the season. The Cardinal ace improves to 7-1 with the win, while the team improves to 10-2.
The Cardinal tacked its only run of the game on the board in the first inning. Freshman Alissa Haber extended her hitting streakto ten games with a lead-off single, and advanced to second on a Maddy Coon walk. Haber moved to third on a fly ballto deep center field by Michelle Smith and scored on an ensuing wild pitch.
Stanford threatened to extend its lead in the seventh inning on a trio of hits by Lindsay Key, Anna Beardman and Haber.With Key and Beardman on first and second, Haber cracked a shot to right center, but Key was thrown out at the plate bycenter fielder Deomni Murray.
In the circle, Penna started out her Miami homecoming right, fanning the first four Golden Panthers to come to theplate and six of the first eight. Penna finished the night with 14 strikeouts and gave up just two hits.
Haber led the team with two hits, and Rosey Neill reached all three times at the plate. The Cardinal out-hit theGolden Panthers 6-2, and left seven runners on base
Stanford continues play at the FIU/Adidas Invitational tomorrow, taking on Texas State at 3 p.m. (ET).
