Flasksay 2nd In 100y Breast At Pac-10 Championships

Senior Mihaly Flaskay finished second in the 100y breast to lead seven Trojans who made final heat appearances, including three in the 100y fly alone, to pace a strong third day for the No. 7 Trojans at the 2007 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash., on Friday (Feb. 23).
USC is in fourth with a day remaining. Stanford leads (655.5) and is followed by Arizona (433), Cal (429), USC (343.5), Arizona State (266) and Washington (144).
Flaskay, who won the 100y breast in 2003, finished second in a season best 53.61, .01 off the NCAA qualifying standard. Flaskay actually led the race by 0.05 at the halfway point, but couldn't hold off Stanford's Paul Kornfeld, who won in 52.75. Flaskay finished no lower than fourth in four career Pac-10 Championships races in the event.
Mangoni, who was 10th in the 400y IM as a freshman, finished fifth in 3:51.27 in his first Pac-10 final appearance.
Junior Bryce Elser, swimming in the 100y fly for the first time at the Pac-10 Championships, led three Trojans in the final heat, taking sixth in a personal best and NCAA consideration 47.89. Junior Brandon Lovell, a 2006 Pac-10 finalist in the 200y fly, made his first league final in the 100y fly and finished seventh in a personal best 47.91, another NCAA consideration mark. Sam Masson, who was third in the race last year, reached the finals again, taking eighth in 47.93.
Senior Larsen Jensen, who won his first career Pac-10 title on Thursday in the 500y free, earned his first final berth into the league's 200y free, taking eighth in 1:38.03. He qualified for the race in 1:36.53, a season best by more than a second. He will be one of the favorites in the timed final of the 1650y free on Saturday.
Bodrogi, who will get a chance to defend his Pac-10 title in the 200y fly on Saturday (Feb. 24), made his third career appearance in the 100y back final, finishing sixth in 48.84. He also just missed qualifying for the 100y finals tonight, taking 12th (48.61) in the consolation final.
USC's 400y medley relay of Bodrogi, Flaskay, Masson and senior Sean Sussex finished third in 3:12.07, a season best and just off the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 3:11.96.
Junior Richard Gosper took 22nd (49.45) in the bonus final of the 100y fly. Senior Joon Youm earned a consolation final appearance in the 100y breast and finished 10th in 55.82 (season best). Also swimming in the consolation final were sophomore Kazu Miyahara (11th, 56.25), Lovell (t-12th, 56.64) and freshman Tyler Schlenker (14th, 56.71).
Freshman James Martin swam in the 400y IM consolation final, taking 14th in 3:59.41, a season best. Junior Evan Marcus swam in the bonus final, finishing 18th (4:09.96, a season best). Shane Tussup also swam in the bonus final of the 100y back, taking 17th (52.86).
The meet concludes Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
