UW Falls To Duke, 4-3, On Controversial Call

Feb. 23, 2007

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Duke scored a run in the bottom of the ninth in controversial fashion Friday, leading the Blue Devils to a 4-3 win over the Washington baseball team at the ECU Invitiational at Clark-Le-Clair Stadium.

With one out and Duke shortstop Gabriel Saade at second base in the ninth, Ryan McCurdy grounded routinely to second base. However, Saade, who was off on the pitch, tried to score on the play, running all the way around third. UW first baseman Curt Rindal's throw home beat the runner and catcher Joey Dunn put a tag on Saade before he reached the plate. But, home plate umpire David Mabe ruled that Dunn had obstructed the runner and called Saade safe, ending the game.

Washington (0-4) failed to pick up its first win of the season while Duke remained unbeaten at 8-0 on the season. The Huskies take on East Carolina tomorrow at noon PST and the UW's game vs. St. John's, scheduled for Sunday, has been moved to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, to avoid bad weather.

The Huskies had taken a lead with a three-run seventh inning. Down 2-0 and with only one hit entering the seventh, Matt Hague led off with a single and scored when Curt Rindal's liner to left sneaked inside the foul pole for the UW's first home run of the season. Later in the inning, UW shortstop Danny Cox hit a solo homer just inside the foul pole in right to give the UW a 3-2 lead.

However, Duck scored in the top of the eighth when Jimmy Gallagher reached on a throwing error from Hague at third base, and then eventually scored on a groudout, tying the game at 3-3.

Saade reached on a one-out bloop double in the ninth to set up the winning run.

UW sophomore Jason Erickson (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits over two and two-thirds innings. Starter Nick Hagadone pitched six innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Duke reliever Jonathan Anderson (1-0), who pitched the ninth, picked up the win. Starter Tony Bajoczky held the UW to two runs on four hits over six and one-third.

Both games Saturday (noon PST vs. East Carolina, 4:00 p.m. PST vs. St. John's) can be heard live at gohuskies.com.
