CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - UCLA softball improved to 10-3 on the 2007 season on Sunday morning, posting an 8-6 victory over No. 7 Northwestern at the Palm Springs Classic. Senior shortstop Jodie Legaspi hit a grand slam home run for a second consecutive game. Junior pitcher Anjelica Selden earned the victory in the circle, striking out 10.
Northwestern opened the scoring in the first inning when Tammy Williams reached on a two-out error and came around to score on a Nicole Pauly double, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins answered with a one-out rally of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Kaila Shull opened with a double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a Lisa Dodd home run, her fifth of the season.
In the fourth inning, UCLA added an unearned run when Julie Burney led off the inning with a single and Jaisa Creps reached safely on a throwing error following her sacrifice bunt attempt, giving UCLA runners on first and second with no outs. Krista Colburn was able to loop a fly ball into shallow right field, where hit popped in and out of the glove of Jessica Miller, allowing pinch runner Celina Rubalcaba to score on the play.
Northwestern answered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth inning as Garland Cooper led off the inning with a home run, her fifth of the year. Jodie Legaspi then led off the bottom half with a double to right field, and would come around to score on an RBI single to left by Creps, bringing the score to 4-2, UCLA.
The Bruins exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Colburn, Shull and Dodd hit consecutive singles and Legaspi connected on her second grand slam in as many days, her fourth home run of the season, to give UCLA an 8-2 lead. Northwestern put together a rally in the top of the seventh, culminating in a three-run home run by Erin Dyer, but it was not enough as UCLA prevailed 8-6.
Selden improved to 5-3 on the season with the win, pitching seven innings and striking out four.
UCLA returns to action on Tuesday with a 1 pm home game against Loyola Marymount. The Bruins will then play host to the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament next weekend at Easton Stadium.
