Palm Springs - Katie Vickers' first inning grand slam helped ignite the No. 16-ranked California softball team to an 11-1 victory in five innings over Maryland in the final day of the Palm Springs Classic on Sunday.

The Golden Bears (10-6) went 3-2 in tournament play and will return home to face Santa Clara on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m.

Vickers went 2-for-3 with five RBI on the afternoon. Marissa Drewrey got the start in the circle for the Bears and picked up her fourth win after allowing one run on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. Brittany LaRosa filled in with 1.1 innings of work as well.

Cal got its offense rolling in the first inning behind the big blast from Vickers. Morgan Siegel drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base after Erika Racklin's ensuing single. Christina Schallig helped load the bases after being issued a walk. Two batters later Vickers delivered the grand slam to give Cal a 4-0 lead.

Maryland got on the board in the top of the second when Jennifer Wellborn's sacrifice fly scored Keri Lounge.

That would be it for the Terrapins, as Cal added four more runs to their lead in the bottom of the second. Carly Winger set the tone with a leadoff single, which was followed by another walk issued to Siegel. Racklin produced her second hit of the afternoon, a single, to advance the runners and load the bases. Another walk issued to Schallig brought home Winger from third base, making the score, 5-1, California. Siegel would score on the next play after taking advantage of a passed ball. Two batters later it was Vickers again who provided a key hit, this time a single to center that scored Schallig. Bernice Masaniai scored the final run of the inning when she scored from third base on a wild pitch.

California's offense kept rolling in the third inning, generating three more runs. Schallig's single to center plated Winger, who led off the inning with a walk, from third base. Masaniai then supplied a single to left field that scored both Racklin and Siegel.

Racklin went 3-for-3 from the plate with a pair of runs, while Siegel scored three runs.
