Hampton Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

BERKELEY, Calif. - California sophomore forward/center Devanei Hampton has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Hampton, a native of Oakland, Calif., continued to roam the post with authority for the Golden Bears in two home victories over the Los Angeles schools last week. Cal held off USC, 86-79 in overtime and then cruised past UCLA, 88-69 to earn sole possession of third place in the Pac-10 heading into the Pac-10 Tournament this week.

Against the Women of Troy on Thursday, Hampton scored 25 points on 9- of-19 shooting (.474) and collected eight rebounds. USC held a 64-56lead with 4:57 to play in the game before Hampton made two freethrows to ignite a 10-2 Cal run that tied the game at 66-66. In theovertime period, Hampton led the Bears with four points as Cal pulledaway for the win.

Facing the Bruins on Saturday, Hampton helped engineer a 38-pointswing from a 17-point first half deficit for the Golden Bears, to a19-point victory. She finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, with15 of those points and nine rebounds coming in the second half tohelp Cal outscore UCLA 60-30 in the final 20 minutes.

Hampton has surpassed 20 points in six of her last seven games andhas been particularly dominant in league play. In non-conferencegames, Hampton averaged 12.4 points but her production soared to 18.9points per game in Pac-10 match-ups. Hampton is also theConference's leading rebounder in Pac-10 play, averaging 8.9 boardsper game, up from 6.4 in non-conference play.

California (22-7, 12-6) equaled the 1983-84 Bears for the best recordthrough 29 games in school history, and its 12 Conference wins tiedthe 1991-92 squad for the best Pac-10 record in school history.

This is the third career Player of the Week award for Hampton and the27th all-time for California. The Bears have received five Pac-10 Player of the Week honors this season (Ashley Walker earned three), equaling the 1986-87 Bears for the most Pac-10 Player of the Week awards in one season in the program's history.
