Stanford's Jessica Nguyen Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Feb. 26, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD sophomore Jessica Nguyen has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 19-25, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Nguyen, the nation's fourth-ranked singles player in the latest Fila Rankings, posted two emphatic singles wins in the No. 3 singles position to help the Cardinal turn away Arizona State and Arizona last week.
On Friday against the 22nd-ranked Sun Devils in a non-conference dual, Nguyen helped the top-ranked Cardinal avoid the upset with her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Roxanne Clarke. One loss would have swung the match the other way, yet Nguyen's win helped assure the Cardinal escaped Tempe with a 4-3 win.
Next time out against Arizona, Nguyen surrendered only one game in overwhelming Kasia Jakowlew, 6-0, 6-1. Nguyen and partner Lejla Hodzic handled the Wildcat duo of Jakowlew and Toporowska, 8-6, in the No. 2 doubles spot, which Stanford needed to win the doubles point by a 2-1 margin.
Nguyen, a native of Chatsworth, Calif., is now a team-best 17-4 in singles play and is 7-0 in dual matches. She has won eight in a row and is 9-1 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Stanford (7-1) hosts 19th-ranked Pepperdine this Friday, March 2, then faces No. 7 California on Saturday in the first of two duals this season between the Bay Area rivals.
This is the first career Player of the Week award for Nguyen and the third all-time for Stanford.
