WSU Soccer Announces Spring Schedule
Feb. 26, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's soccer team will participate in a tournament in Arizona and compete against some of the top women's club teams in England as part of a foreign tour, announced Head Coach Matt Potter.
'This spring takes on a different look to previous years,' said Potter. 'The main part of our spring has us traveling to England over Spring Break. We have a great schedule put together by Quest Sports, playing top class opposition in Arsenal, Charlton and Bristol Rovers over the course of the week, and a chance to immerse ourselves in a soccer culture and all that England has to offer. We are fortunate to be able to travel to Arizona as part of the Sereno Soccer Tournament competing against two quality programs in Minnesota and Ohio State and to wrap up we have a tough road trip to Gonzaga. In all, an exciting spring full of the opportunity to play some great teams and gain valuable insight as we look towards the upcoming fall.'
WSU will compete in the Sereno Soccer Tournament, held March 2-4 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Cougars first take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday, Mar. 3 at 7:00 p.m. WSU then wraps up the trip against Ohio State Sunday, Mar. 4 at 10:30 a.m. Minnesota, a member of the Big Ten Conference, finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 8-9-2 and went 1-8-1 in league play while Ohio State concluded its season with an overall record of 10-8-1 and had four Buckeyes named All-Big Ten selections.
The Cougars will then depart for a week-long trip to England where they will face top women's club teams in Arsenal, Charlton and the Bristol Rovers. A semi-professional team based in London, the Arsenal Ladies won their eighth FA Women's Premier League title in 2006. They will host the Cougars March 12 at 1:00 p.m.
WSU and the Bristol Rovers will then play March 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Bristol. The Bristol Rovers have reached the semifinals of the FA Women's Cup on several occasions and have won nine league trophies since their formation in 1998. WSU concludes their foreign tour with a match against Charlton at 5:00 p.m. March 16 in London. Charlton has won three premiership titles and finished tied for third in the league in 2005-06.
The Cougars round out their spring schedule with a trip to nearby Spokane, Wash. and take on in-state rival Gonzaga April 21. Game time has not been determined.
