Missy Penna Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford sophomore Missy Penna has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 20-26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Penna, a native of Miami, Fla., picked up four wins and three shutouts last week in her hometown, as Stanford went 5-0 to win the title at the Adidas-Golden Panther Invitational hosted by Florida International. Two of Stanford's wins were 1-0 decisions, and Penna pitched complete game shutouts in each outing to keep the Cardinal on track.
The first 1-0 win came against Florida International on Thursday, as Penna threw a two-hitter, striking out 14 without walking a single batter. Facing Purdue on Saturday, Penna nailed down another 1-0?win, this time giving up only one hit and a pair of walks, and fanning 11 Boilermakers. On Sunday against Marist, Penna continued her dominance, throwing another one-hit shutout in six innings, walking one and striking out 10.
For the week, Penna was 4-0 with no runs allowed in 23.1 innings. She allowed just six hits and three walks while striking out 38 batters. Penna improved her overall record to 10-1, the most wins in the Conference. Her 0.82 ERA is second in the Conference and her 99 strikeouts are tied for third. Opponents are hitting just .123?against Penna so far, the best opposing average of any Pac-10 pitcher.
The Cardinal (14-2) is riding a 12-game winning streak heading into the Worth Invitational this week in Fullerton, Calif. Stanford remained at No. 8 in today's edition of the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25. This is Penna's first career Pitcher of the Week honor and Stanford's 32nd Player/Pitcher of the Week award all-time.
