Nguyen Honored By Pac-10; No. 1 Cardinal Returns Home
Feb. 27, 2007
STANFORD, Calif.- Winners of four straight, No. 1 Stanford kicks off a five-match homestand this weekend that begins with a pair of top-20 opponents.
After last week's sweep of Arizona State and Arizona, Stanford (7-1) returns to Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday, Mar. 2, to host No. 18 Pepperdine (5-4) in the first of three non-conference matches during the homestand. Just like the Cardinal, the Waves participated in the National Team Indoor Championships earlier this month and posted a 2-1 mark. Match time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Mar. 3, Stanford hosts No. 7 California (8-2) in the second of three meetings between the two programs this year. In addition to matching up on Apr. 21 in the regular season finale, the Bay Area rivals faced off back on Feb. 2 in Madison, Wis., during the quarterfinals of the National Team Indoor Championships. The Cardinal won that match 6-1.
Despite a steady rain early in the week, temperatures are expected to be in the upper-60s for the weekend. Stanford has already had two matches (Fresno State, Sacramento State) cancelled due to rain.
In other news, sophomore Jessica Nguyen was rewarded for her recent hot streak. Ranked No. 4 nationally, Nguyen posted two emphatic wins at the No. 3 position last week and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for Feb. 19-25.
Last week's straight-set victories bumped Nguyen's overall record this year to a team-best 17-4. She is 7-0 in dual match play, has won eight in a row dating back to November and now owns a 9-1 against Pac-10 opponents and nationally-ranked opponents.
The honor is the first of Nguyen's career and second for a Cardinal this year. Senior Theresa Logar was recognized on Feb. 5.
