LOS ANGELES - Following a pair of losses in the Bay Area last week, the No. 15 UCLA women's tennis team got back into the win column on Tuesday, posting a 6-1 decision over Loyola Marymount at the LMU Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins up their record to 6-4 overall, while the Lions drop to 3-3.
The Bruins, who had claimed the doubles point in five of nine matches heading into the afternoon, began the day by sweeping the doubles action. After taking an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 position, the point was clinched at court No. 3, where UCLA's Anna-Viktoria Lind and Stephanie Wetmore defeated Audrey Bulkley/Bliss Nixon, 8-2.
UCLA continued to take control once singles play began, taking three matches in straight sets to go ahead 4-0 and clinch the victory. First off was court No. 2, where Ashley Joelson was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Robyn Baker. That win was followed by Alex McGoodwin at court No. 3, as she downed Erin Ivey, 6-1, 6-2. The clinching victory came at court No. 4, where Elizabeth Lumpkin dispatched of Elrien de Villiers, 6-4, 6-2.
The only other straight-set winner for UCLA on Tuesday was Wetmore, who downed LMU's Serena Fermin, 6-2, 6-3 at court No. 6. Lind won in a 10-point tiebreaker at court No. 5, while Riza Zalameda was upset in three sets at court No. 1.
