DUCKS AND CARDINAL CONTINUE PUSH INTO FOURTH WEEK OF ACTION
Non-conference play continues as March and the start of spring draw nearer ... ARIZONA STATE maintains the league's top overall record (17-1) despite suffering its first loss last week after a 15-0 start ... OREGON hopes it can do the Sun Devils one better this week, as the Ducks have rolled off a 15-game win streak of their own after deciding an opening day loss did not sit well ... Arizona State and UCLA each host tournaments this week, while the Husky Softball Classic marks the home opener for WASHINGTON ... STANFORD, sporting a 12-game win streak of its own, heads to Fullerton, Calif. and the Worth Invitational where OREGON STATE will also lace up its cleats this weekend ... ARIZONA is the only Conference team avoiding the tournament mayhem, as the Wildcats host Missouri for a three-game series, Friday-Sunday ... Every Pac-10 team remains ranked, with the Ducks making the biggest leap in the country from No. 25 to No. 17 ... No. 2 Arizona, No. 4 Arizona State, and No. 8 Stanford represent the league in the Top-10.

ARIZONA (11-3): The Wildcats took two of three games from No. 3/2 Texas A&M last week, winning the first game of the series, 5-0, and the rubber game, 6-2 ... junior pitcher Taryne Mowatt dominated the Aggies during the series. On Friday, she struck out 13 of the 27 Aggies she faced and came within three batters of no-hitting a team that was previously undefeated, allowig only one hit in a complete game shutout. Mowatt threw another strong seven innings the next night but took the loss due to four unearned runs. She came back to pick up the save on Sunday, allowing only four hits in 15.0 innings and striking out 28 for the weekend ... Arizona's 3-2 record against ranked opponents is the best in the Pac-10 ... senior Chelsie Mesa enters the weekend with a team-leading 11-game hitting streak. The 11-game run ties Mesaís career high that was set last year ... senior Kristie Fox is tied with Alison McCutcheon for eighth place on UA's career RBI list with 184. Fox is currently seventh in the Pac-10 with 17 RBI.
ARIZONA STATE (17-1): The Sun Devils suffered their first defeat against No. 7/12 Northwestern last week after 15-straight wins to start the season ... freshman hurler Megan Elliott had a pleasant trip to the Palm Springs Classic, going 2-0 with wins over Illinois-Chicago and Oklahoma State while hitting her first home run against UIC ... senior Bianca Cruz has seen a major uptick in her offensive stats this season. Her 16 RBI already surpassed the 11 she collected in 2006, and her current .367 batting average is well ahead of last season's .213 clip ... junior Katie Burkhart has reached double digits in strikeouts in eight of nine starts and is averaging 12.6 K's per game ... sophomore sensation Kaitlin Cochran went 8-of-14 (.571) last week and scored eight runs in ASU's five games. Cochran has put some space between her and the resr of the Pac-10 in batting average, now hitting .545 and reaching base more than 60% of the time (.603 OBP).
CALIFORNIA (10-6): Cal is coming off a 4-2 week, starting with a run-rule win over St. Mary's at home, and followed by a 3-2 showing at the Palm Spings Classic ... on Friday, the Bears posted a 7-5 win over Notre Dame and 6-3 win vs. Oklahoma State, thanks in large part to the hitting prowess of senior Alex Sutton, who had a hat trick of homers on the day. Sutton slammed the Fighting Irish in grand fashion in the first game, then hit two solo shots against OSU ... Cal is 9-0 when scoring the first run of the game, and 1-6 when its opponent grabs the first lead ... sophomore lead-off hitter Morgan Siegel has showed good patience at the plate, walking a league-leading 15 times this year and parlaying many of those free passes into runs, as Siegel is tied for the Pac-10 runs lead with 18.
OREGON (15-1): Last week the Ducks set a school-record with their 15th-consecutive victory, passing the old mark of 14 set in 2004. The Ducks have done it in all phases of the game, outscoring their opponents 103-17 during the streak, with seven shutout wins and four run-rule wins. Defense can't be overlooked, as Oregon leads the Pac-10 with a .982 fielding percentage ... the main beneficiary of the steady defense has been Oregon's pitching staff, which boasts a Conference-best 0.88 ERA (13 earned runs in 103.0 innings) ... The Ducks made the biggest jump of any team in the Feb. 27 ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25, climbing from 25th to 17th ... redshirt freshman Jennifer Salling earned her first career Pac-10 Player of the Week award after cranking out 13 hits in 18 at-bats (.722) and 11 RBI in Oregon's six wins last week. Salling had five-straight multi-hit games, and a career-game against Siena College on Friday in which she went 4-for-4 with two triples, a home run and six RBI. Salling's .500 batting average is second in the Pac-10.
OREGON STATE (8-5): The Beavers went 2-3 at the Palm Spings Classic, suffering three tough losses to top-15 teams last weekend at the Palm Springs Classic. Despite strong pitching, OSU couldn't find their offensive rhythm, falling 2-0 to #7/12 Northwestern on Friday, 4-1 to #9/10 Oklahoma on Sunday, and 2-0 to #10/11 Texas on Sunday ... In Oregon State's win Friday vs. Penn State, senior Brianne McGowan pitched the first complete game shutout for the Beavers this year, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out six ... senior Natalie Johnson leads the Beavers with a .463 batting average (5th in Pac-10) and a .511 on-base percentage
STANFORD (9-2): The Cardinal ran their winning streak to 12 with a 5-0 showing last week at the Adidas-Golden Panther Invitational, hosted by Florida International ... Stanford ace Missy Penna returned to her hometown of Miami, Fla. for the tourney, and the home cooking powered the sophomore to four wins and three shutouts. Penna spun a two-hitter in a 1-0 win over FIU (2/22), a one-hitter in another 1-0 win vs. Purdue (2/24), and another one-hitter in a six-inning win over Marist (2/25). She struck out 38 in 23.1 innings, giving up no runs and six hits, earning her the first Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week award of her career ... Penna's 10 wins leads the Conference as does her .123 opposing batting average ... freshman catcher Rosey Neill drove in eight runs during the tournament and hit 7-for-11, raising her season batting average from .240 to .361 ... Stanford leads the Pac-10 with seven sacrifice flies.
UCLA (10-5): The Bruins picked up their first win over a ranked opponent this season, downing #7/12 Northwestern, 8-6 on Sunday ... junior ace Anjelica Selden had her first two double-digit strikeout efforts of the season in the UCLA's past two games. Selden struck out 10 Wildcats Sunday, then fanned 11 and gave up just one hit in a 5-0 Bruin win over Maryland ... the two games were also highlighted by a Jodie Legaspi grand slam in each, the third and fourth slams of her career ... UCLA is the top hitting club in the league, ranking first in average (.346), home runs (25), slugging percentage (.603), and on-base percentage (.437).
WASHINGTON (12-2): The Husky offense is currently led by a pair of players who don't yet have the at-bats to appear in the Conference stat leaders. Senior Dena Tyson is hitting .571, which would lead the league save for she has only 21 official plate appearances. In those 21 at-bats, Tyson has 12 hits, five home runs and 14 RBI. Tyson is one home run shy of her 2006 total of six, which she needed 157 at-bats to amass. Sophomore Marnie Koziol is batting .517 (15-for-29) in 10 games this year. All of Koziol's hits have been singles ... UW lost its first game at the Palm Springs Classic to #10/11 Texas, 4-0, but bounced back with four wins in a row to end the week ... sophomore strikeout artist Danielle Lawrie racked up 35 more K's in three starts last week. She is now averaging 14.1 strikeouts per game, tops in the Conference. She has tallied double-digit strikeouts in every start this season.
