Sun Devil Soccer to Play Two of Four Spring Matches This Weekend
Feb. 28, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University soccer team will open its spring exhibition season this weekend as the Sun Devils are set to face a pair of foes from the Big Ten Conference at the CAP Basin Sports Complex in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Sun Devils, who are coming off an 8-8-3 season in 2006, are scheduled to play four exhibitions this spring with all four being held in the Valley of the Sun.
This weekend, ASU will face Ohio State Saturday night at 5 p.m. at CAP Basin before playing Minnesota at noon on Sunday. The Buckeyes are coming off a 10-8-1 regular season and carry a 1-1-1 record so far this spring after playing a trio of matches in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend. At Tennessee, OSU defeated the Vols, 2-0, tied Illinois, 2-2, and lost to North Carolina, 2-1. The Golden Gophers are coming off an 8-9-2 campaign and, just like the Sun Devils, will be playing their first matches of the spring.
Historically, the Sun Devils and Buckeyes have not faced one another in regular season play while the Sun Devils and Golden Gophers have met twice. In the first meeting, UM and ASU tied, 1-1, in Tempe during the 2000 season before the Golden Gophers scored a 1-0 decision in Minneapolis at the start of the 2001 season.
Following the two matches in Scottsdale this weekend, the Sun Devils will play twice more in the coming weeks. On March 31, ASU will play host to UTEP in a 1 p.m. match. Then, an intrastate match will be played as Northern Arizona will visit Tempe for a 5 p.m. match on April 14.
