The USC men's golf team, ranked No. 8 in the latest Golfworld.com poll, returns to action next week when it hosts its annual USC Collegiate Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., Monday and Tuesday (March 5-6).
The 15-team field, featuring many of the nation's top teams, will play 36 holes Monday on North Ranch's par-71, 6,900-yard course and another 18 holes on Tuesday. Action begins with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday and at 7:15 a.m. off the 1st and 10th tees on Tuesday.
The field for the 2007 USC Collegiate Invitational, celebrating its 30th year, includes five teams in Golfword.com's latest Top 15, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 6 Coastal Carolina, No. 7 UCLA, No. 8 USC and No. 13 BYU. The rest of the field includes Loyola Marymount, California, Washington State, Oregon State, Oregon, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas Tech and Tennessee.
Eighteen of the nation's top 100 ranked players, according to Golfweek.com, will be playing as well. They include USC's Jamie Lovemark (No. 2) and Tom Glissmeyer (No. 99), Stanford's Zack Miller (No. 10), Rob Grube (No. 24), Matthew Savage (No. 27) and Joseph Bramlett (No. 38), Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson (No. 12) and Zack Byrd (No. 25), BYU's Daniel Summerhays (No. 15) and Clay Ogden (No. 70), Tennessee's Philip Pettitt (No. 30) and Charles Ford (No. 48), UCLA's Kevin Chappell (No. 43) and Lucas Lee (No. 50), TCU's Jon McLean (No. 47), Texas Tech's Oscar Floren (No. 57) and Jake Younan-Wise (No. 95) and Loyola Marymount's Brian Locke (No. 83).
USC has won this tournament three times (1991, 1997 and 2002) and Sam Randolph is the only Trojan to win the individual title (1984). The Trojans finished second last year with a three-round 870 and spent part of the final round tied for first. Graduated senior Tyler Ley led USC, finishing tied for seventh. Pepperdine won the team title last year with an 861 (+9) and Oklahoma's Anthony Kim won the individual title with a 204 (-9).
Freshman Jamie Lovemark, on the watch list for the 2007 Ben Hogan Award, which goes to the nation's top men's golfer, is working on a string of seven consecutive sub-70 rounds, dating back to the fall, and leads the Trojans with a stroke average of 70.00.
He led wire-to-wire to win the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, posting an eight-shot win with a three-day, 4-under 209. The title was USC's first since Ben Hayes won to kick off the 2004-2005 season and was Troy's first by a freshman since Hunter Mahan won back-to-back events in the fall of 2000.
Lovemark also finished third in his collegiate debut at the Inverness Intercollegiate with a 219, helping USC to a team title, and also took third at the CordeValle Collegiate with a 204 (-12). Recently, Lovemark earned an invite to play as an amateur in the 2007 Buick Invitational (Jan. 25-28) and parlayed it into a tie for 39th. He finished with a 72-hole 285 (66-74-73-72, -3). He has been USC's highest finisher in four of five starts.
Sophomore Tom Glissmeyer is second on the team in stroke average at 72.73 and has a pair of top 5 finishes, including a tie for fifth most recently at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate. After carding a 201 there with a 66, 66 and 69, he is working on a streak of five straight sub-70 rounds. Glissmeyer also posted a fifth at the Inverness Intercollegiate and tied for 12th at the CordeValle Collegiate after back-to-back 69s to close out the tournament.
Senior Joshua Wooding has come on strong in the last three tournaments. He posted a pair of top 20 finishes (tied for 11th at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge and tied for 19th at the CordeValle Collegiate) to close out the fall schedule. He then turned in a pair of sub-70 rounds at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate earlier this month. His 73.93 stroke average is third best on the squad.
Freshman Rory Hie has a stroke average of 74.00 and has a pair of top 20 finishes. The first was a tie for 20th at the Inverness Intercollegiate and the second was a tie for 12th at the CordeValle Collegiate. Most recently, he closed out play at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate with a 69 and a 68, the latter tying his low round for the season.
Senior Jordan Nasser rounds out a strong fivesome with a stroke average of 74.07 and has finished in the top 30 in three of five starts. He tied for 29th in the opener, tied for 27th at PGA West and tied for 28th at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. He has carded 72 or lower six times.
