Cusick's RBI Triple Gives USC The 4-3 Win At Georgia
March 2, 2007
ATHENS, Georgia - Junior second baseman Matt Cusick's (Mission Viejo/Santa Margarita HS) RBI triple in the top of the ninth gave the USC Trojans the 4-3 nonconference victory over the host Georgia Bulldogs at Foley Field. The Trojans rallied after the Bulldogs scored all three of their runs in the first inning and have now won four of their last five games.
Cusick hammered a fly ball down the left field line that skipped under the glove of Georgia left fielder Blake Cannady, scoring freshman shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS), who started the inning with a leadoff walk.
Sophomore right-hander Ryan Cook (Clovis/Clovis HS) pitched into the seventh inning for the fourth time in five starts this season. Cook threw eight innings, giving up three runs (all unearned) with no walks and seven strikeouts on the evening as he improved to 3-0 this season with a 2.43 ERA.
Senior closer Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save on the year and to take over second place alone on USC's all-time list with his 27th career save.
Georgia starter Nathan Moreau went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Stephen Dodson (0-1) took the loss after giving up the lone hit to Cusick in four innings of relief.
Matt Cerione led off the Georgia first with a ground ball that USC third baseman Hector Estrella mishandled to reach first safely. Ryan Peisel and Jonathan Wyatt hit back-to-back singles to load the bases before Gordon Beckham's fielder's choice produced the Bulldogs' first run. Joey Lewis later laced a two-run, two-out double down the right field line for the 3-0 advantage.
After the three runs, Cook allowed six singles and only worked out of one jam in the second when Georgia had runners at first and second with one out. Green made a great backhanded dive on Cerione's ground ball, throwing to second for the force and Cook retired Wyatt on a fly out to end the inning.
The Trojans got to Moreau in the third when freshman Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) led off with his third homer of the season, a solo shot to right. Green followed suit with his second home run of the season, hitting one over the wall in left center to cut Georgia's lead to 3-2.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. Eastern start with the finale on Sunday (March 4) at 1 p.m. Eastern. Both games will be carried online at georgiadogs.com.
