Arizona Bounces Beavers In First Round, 69-54

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Ashley Whisonant scored a career high 23 points to help Arizona beat Oregon State 69-54 in the first round of the Pac-10 tournament on Friday.
Joy Hollingsworth added 13 points for the ninth-seeded Wildcats (11-20), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Malia O'Neal had 10 points.
The Wildcats face top-seeded Stanford in the quarterfinals.
Jasmine Smith scored 17 points to lead the eighth-seeded Beavers (9-19), who lost their ninth in 10 games. Casey Nash, the Pac-10 scoring champion, was limited to 11 points. She did manage five rebounds to move into fifth place on Oregon State's all-time list with 679. Ashley Allen hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to finish with 12 points.
The Wildcats began pulling away midway through the second half. Oregon State held a 43-41 advantage with 9:36 remaining to play and then went on a cold spell over the next five minutes.
Arizona took advantage, scoring 12 unanswered points to grab control. Whisonant and Amina Njonkou combined to score nine of the points during the decisive run.
The season series between the teams was fairly even, with each winning on the road. The Wildcats won by seven in Corvallis while the Beavers won by four in Tucson.
