Elliott and Cowles lead No. 2 Softball Over Houston and North Florida

TEMPE, Ariz. - Led by Megan Elliott and Mindy Cowles on the mound and at the plate, the No. 2 ASU Softball team took home two wins on the night as they beat Houston 2-1 and North Florida 6-2 in day two of the Wilson/DeMarini Tournament. The Sun Devils now stand at 20-2 on the season with one day remaining in the tournament.


Game one saw Megan Elliott take to the mound to pitch a three-hitter with six strikeouts against the Cougars, with only one unearned run allowed in the first after a Sun Devil error brought in a run to boost the Cougars up 1-0.


ASU retaliated in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off walk to Jessica Mapes coming home with a sac bunt and a single from Kaitlin Cochran. Cochran also scored the final go-ahead run of the game as well as Bianca Cruz dug in to hit an RBI single to left field to wrap up the scoring on both sides for the night.


Game two brought out Mindy Cowles on the mound for ASU, as the Sun Devil offense finally warmed a bit with seven hits off of the Ospreys. ASU jumped ahead in the top of the first as Bianca Cruz crushed a three-run shot over center field, plating Jessica Mapes and Kaitlin Cochran. The Sun Devils added another in the second and two more in the fourth with a solo shot to center from Mindy Cowles and an RBI double from Jackie Vasquez to push the score to 6-0.


The Ospreys battled back in the bottom of the fourth with right fielder Kara Rutenbar coming in to hit a two-run home run over left field before ASU brought in Megan Elliott in relief of Cowles to close out the game with a 6-2 win.


ASU will wrap up the Wilson/DeMarini Tournament tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Utah Valley State Wolverines at 1 p.m. at ASU's Farrington Stadium.
