No. 15 Huskies Upset By No. 24 Minnesota in Tennis

March 3, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS - The Washington Husky men's tennis team had a seven-match win streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday. The Huskies (9-2) held an early 1-0 lead over Minnesota (8-2), but the Golden Gophers won five of the six singles matches to send the visiting Huskies to their second road loss in two tries.

The Huskies found themselves in the driver's seat early with wins from Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic in the No. 1 doubles and Derek Drabble and Andy Kuharszky in the No. 3 doubles. Chu and Slovic won their third-straight match since being reunited; beating Minnesota's Sion Wilkins and D.J. Geatz 8-5 to run their Husky record career total to 76 wins each.

Kuharszky and Drabble improved to 3-0 in dual matches, while the Huskies' Patrik Fischer and Michael Ricks fell to 14-4 overall and had a six-match win-streak snapped in the No. 2 doubles.

Washington couldn't translate the forward momentum over to singles though, losing five of the matches--three of them in three-sets. Daniel Chu was the lone Husky to emerge victorious, taking a 7-5, 7-5 decision over D.J. Geatz in the No. 3 singles.

Kuharszky, Fischer and David Chu all lost for the Huskies in three-set marathons. Fischer lost in the No. 4 spot as he and Minnesota's Mikey Kantar split tie-breakers in the first and second sets before Kantar won 7-5 in the third.

Kuharszky lost 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Raoul Schward in the No. 2 singles to snap a personal seven-match win streak and fall to a team-best 9-2 in dual matches, 16-3 overall.

Brian Lupinski `s 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win in the No. 6 singles over Chu clinched the match for Minnesota.

Slovic remained stuck in a tie for fifth on the career list for wins after losing in two sets to Andres Osorio at the No. 1 singles spot. Slovic and Eric Drew each have 86 career singles wins.

The Huskies will take Sunday off before returning to the court in South Bend, Ind., on Monday against the ninth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
