No. 7 Cal Falls To Top-Ranked Stanford

STANFORD - The No. 7 California women's tennis team dropped its third match of the season as it fell to No. 1 Stanford, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears record dropped to 8-3, while the Cardinal improved to 9-1.

It was the second meeting of the season for these two teams, with Stanford beating Cal, 6-1, in the second round of the ITA Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 2.

Freshman Nina Henkel was the lone Bear to earn a win on The Farm. Playing on the No. 3 court, Henkel defeated No. 8 Celia Durkin, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Henkel rebounded after losing the first set and came back to dominate the second and third sets.

Stanford won four of the other five singles matches in straight sets. Junior Marion Ravelojaona won the second set in her match against Lejla Hodzic, but Hodzic would eventually take the match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The Cardinal started the day with three doubles victories to take the doubles point.

Cal doesn't have to wait long to try to get back in the win column. The Bears host No. 18 Pepperdine Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center. Pepperdine lost to Stanford on Friday afternoon.
