Smith's Seventh Inning Blast Lifts Cardinal Over Texas Tech

Fullerton, Calif. - Michelle Smith hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh and the Stanford softball team picked up a 2-1decision over the Texas Tech Red Raiders this morning at the Worth Classic in Fullerton, Calif. Missy Penna struckout 12 on her way to her 11th win of the season and the Cardinal improved to 15-4 going into the fourth game ofthe tournament.
After 10 hitless innings, Maddy Coon ended the Cardinal drought in the fourth inning with a single down the left fieldline. Freshman Rosey Neill put Coon in scoring position, moving her to second with a sacrifice bunt. On the nextat bat, Smith hit a ball deep, but it fell just wide of the left field foul pole. Smith didn't let theCardinal down, however, and quickly hit a single to left field that scored Coon. The Cardinal run was the firstin 12 innings of play.
Texas Tech brought one around to tie the game in the sixth inning. With one out, Ashley Parker singled down theright field line and successfully stole second. Montana Patin cracked a deep single to center field to score Parkerand knotted the game at 1-1.
Smith cracked the game-winning homerun to center field in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, the Stanfordjunior sent her second ball of the tournament and third of the season over the fence. Smith's blast, the 26th ofher career, brought in her third RBI of the weekend and 16th of the season.
Stanford notched four hits in the contest and left just two runners on base. The Cardinal will meet No. 8/12Northwestern in the second game of the morning double-header at 11:15.
