Softball Sweeps Second Day at Winsberg

LOS ANGELES - UCLA upped its record to 14-6 on the season with a pair of victories on Saturday at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. The Bruins opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Loyola-Chicago before run-ruling No. 17 Florida, 10-2 in six innings. UCLA will conclude Winsberg play on Sunday at 2 pm when the Bruins face Loyola-Chicago.

Game 1: UCLA 3, Loyola-Chicago 0
Batting as the visiting team, the Bruins and Ramblers traded zeroes for three innings before the Bruins manufactured a run in the top of the fourth inning. The rally started with a leadoff bunt single from Lisa Dodd, who scored from first on a double down the left field line by Jodie Legaspi.

In the fifth, a lead-off walk to Whitney Holum brought in pinch runner Lauren Wilmoth, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Julie Burney and scored on a single to right by Kaila Shull, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.

UCLA's final run of the game came across in the sixth inning. Jodie Legaspi led off with an infield single, went to third on a Megan Langenfeld double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Julie Burney for the 3-0 lead.

Langenfeld earned the victory for the Bruins, striking out three and allowing four hits in the shut-out effort.

Game 2: UCLA 10, Florida 2
The Gators drew first blood in this match-up of two ranked teams as Fontana, Calif., native Kim Waleszonia led off the game with a double to right, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Roussell and scored on a wild pitch to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.

UCLA answered in the bottom of the first inning as Shull was hit by a pitch and went to second on a single by Legaspi. After Langenfeld was hit by a pitch as well to lad the bases, both Shull and Legaspi would score on a full-count single to left by Jaisa Creps to give UCLA a 2-1 lead after one inning of play.

In the third, a one-out walk by Langenfeld led to the Bruins next score. Langenfeld went to third on a double by Creps and would score on a sacrifice fly by Holum to give the Bruins a 3-1 advantage after three complete.

The big inning of the day was the bottom off the fifth as the Bruins sent 11 to the plate, scoring five runs. Langenfeld lefd off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Wilmoth. Wilmoth advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Creps and scored on a Burney double. After a Tara Henry bunt single, Krista Colburn connected on a single of her own, scoring Burney. The bases would be loaded once again as Shull was plunked for the second time in the game. Dodd, Legaspi and Langenfeld would all draw RBI walks, bringing the score to 8-1 in UCLA's favor.

Savana Kelly connected on her first home run of the season to make the score 8-2, but UCLA would put it away in the bottom half of the sixth inning. The Bruins quickly loaded the bases on a walk to Holum, Burney being hit by a pitch, the fourth UCLA hit batter in the game, and Henry drawing a walk to lad the bases for Colburn. Colburn singled to right, scoring pinch runner Celina Rubalcaba, and Lisa Dodd would connect on the walk-off single to give UCLA the 10-2 six-inning victory.

Anjelica Selden earned the win in the circle for the Bruins, striking out nine, walking two and scattering four hits on the day.

UCLA will host the final day of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Sunday with Illinois State and Florida playing at 9 am, Long Beach State and Illinois State playing at 11:30, the Bruins facing Loyola Chicago at 2 pm and the Ramblers facing Long Beach State in the final game of the day at 4:30 pm
