Hodge, Muller Defeated in Pacific Coast Doubles Championship

March 4, 2007

Assistant coach David Hodge and sophomore Blake Muller won their semifinal match earlier in the day, but lost in the finals of the 118th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. In an impressive showing during the three-day tournament, Hodge and Muller won five matches before being beaten in today's final.

The Cardinal duo beat Drew Hoskins and Abdullah Magdas, an independent team, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 6-4 in the seminals. In the finals, Achim Ceban and Benedikt Stronk came back to win the final two sets to beat Hodge and Muller by scores of 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 6-2. Ceban is currently a freshman at San Diego State while Stronk played at SDSU and graduated last year.

Hodge, an All-American player at Baylor from 1997-2001, played on the ITF and ATP circuits for two years before moving on to the coaching ranks. He coaches at Colorado in 2003 and '04, then joined the Cardinal staff under John Whitlinger in 2005. Muller, a sophomore from Santa Barbara, has played No. 1 doubles for the Cardinal this year with Matt Bruch. But, Bruch's injury put Hodge and Muller together for the tournament.

In the consolation round, Stanford's Kevin Kaiser and David Ryan lost a semifinal match to Dimyrto Petrov and Ivan Puchkarov of Oklahoma State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
