WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE senior Roxanne Clarke has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 26-Mar. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Clarke, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, helped the 20th-ranked Sun Devils to a major road upset of fourth-ranked North Carolina, 5-2, on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Playing in the No. 3 singles spot for ASU, Clarke upset the nation's 80th-ranked singles player Austin Smith in dominating fashion, 6-4, 6-0. She also teamed with fellow senior Kady Pooler at No. 1 doubles to defeat North Carolina's ninth-ranked doubles team of Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen, 8-4, and the Sun Devils captured the doubles point by a 2-1 margin. Clarke and Pooler are currently ranked sixth as a doubles team in the Fila Rankings.
On Sunday afternoon, Arizona State was unable to pull off another stunner, losing 5-2 to the 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils in Durham, N.C., however Clarke upset a second-straight ranked singles opponent during the match. This time it was 77th-ranked Elizabeth Plotkin who fell to Clarke, 6-4, 6-3 at the third singles spot.
The Sun Devils are now 7-4 as they prepare to take the road again in two weeks as they head to L.A. to take on USC and UCLA on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17 in two non-conference dual matches. Clarke has been a rock in the middle of the lineup for the Sun Devils, going 8-2 in dual match play.
