WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - After day one of action at the USC Collegiate Invitational, the California men's golf team is in fifth place, trailing only four nationally-ranked programs. Freshman Andrey Mindirgasov led the Golden Bears in the first round, firing a two-under par 69 on North Ranch Country Club's 6,900-yard course. Junior Kent Yamane added a first-round 70 as both players finished the day at three-over 145's.
USC led the event after the first two rounds of play with a 568 (E). Stanford was in second place (569, +1), while, UCLA (570, +2) and Tennessee (574, +6) rounded out the top four. The Golden Bears finished the first day with a 585 (+17).
'No teams broke par, the course is tough, it's tight and it's easy to get in trouble,' Cal head coach Steve Desimone said. 'The wind picked up this afternoon and we turned into the toughest holes at the wrong time. I give the kids credit, they did a fabulous job, making seven or eight birdies down the stretch, taking what could have been a very difficult round and made a positive out of it.'
The final round will begin on Tuesday morning beginning at 7:15 a.m. Live stats are available by visiting www.golfstat.com.
Mindirgasov was very solid through his opening round, parring 12 holes, while adding three birdies and an eagle on the par-five 505-yard eighth hole, to finish with his 69. He added a pair of birdies in his second round, despite slipping to a 76.
Yamane was also strong in the early round with just two bogeys which were more than offset by his trio of birdies as he notched a 70. In the second round, the junior slipped to a 75.
Sophomore George Gandranata started slow with a 73 in the opening round, but he was the Bears' leader on the afternoon 18, connecting on four birdies to finish with a plus-one 72.
'This was pretty much a team-effort,' Desimone said. 'We're in a similar situation to where we were in Hawaii, it's a tremendous opportunity for us to get into a position for a regional bid if we can finish this off. I am very proud of the way they fought through it today. We'll see how it goes, but I like our chances.'
