Husky Men's Golf Takes Early Tournament Lead

March 5, 2007

AUBURN, Wash. - - A junior varsity University of Washington men's golf team took advantage of ideal course conditions Monday as it shot a seven-over-par 583 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the Washington National Winter Championships at Washington National Golf Club.

The Huskies shot a one-under-par 287 in the morning's first round for the best team score of the day. UW owns a narrow lead over second-place Oregon, which shot a nine-over-par 585. British Columbia University sits in third place with a 589, while Western Washington enters tomorrow's final found in fourth place at 598. Oregon State (603), St. Martin's (615) and Concordia (617) round out the field.

University of Washington sophomore transfer Chris Killmer owns a tight one-stroke lead over teammate Kellen Eakin and Oregon's Zeke Reyna after posting a two-round score of three-under-par 141. The Bellingham, Wash. native shot 71-70 in the day's two rounds and was the only player in the field to shoot under-par in both rounds.

The field will return to par-72 Washington National for the third and final round of the event Tuesday morning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

'I thought we played very well,' said UW head coach Matt Thurmond. 'Chris and Kellen both played very well today so I am excited for them. In our qualifying for our first-team tournament in Las Vegas later this week, Chris was in a playoff for the last spot to make the squad. The challenge for him was to re-motivate himself and I thought he did that today. Kellen has been right on the edge for us all year.'

Washington sophomore Kellen Eakin shot a season-low four-under-par 68 to take an early lead in the morning's initial round. The University Place, Wash. native opened the round with the first of his six birdies then took a bogey on the second hole to return to even-par. He then birdied three of the next seven holes to finish three-under on the front nine. After a bogie on number 10, Eakin returned to form with birdies on the par-five 14th and 17th holes to close out the round.
