UCLA Senior Benjamin Kohlloeffel Named Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week
March 5, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior Benjamin Kohlloeffel has been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 26-Mar. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Kohlloefel has continually outclassed many of the top players in the nation this season, and last week was no different. UCLA played just once last week, facing No. 14 Pepperdine on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in a battle between the last two national champions. UCLA won the title in 2005 while Pepperdine took the crown in 2006.
The Bruins came out on top with a 6-1 victory, with Kohlloeffel leading the way at No. 1 singles. The 2006 NCAA Singles Champion, Kohlloeffel took care of Pepperine's Andre Begemann, 6-3, 6-3. Begemann is currently ranked 15th in the Fila Rankings while Kohlloeffel is fifth.
Pepperdine picked up its only point in doubles by winning at the second and third spots, however Kohlloeffel was victorious in his doubles match, teaming with Philipp Gruendler at No. 1 doubles to upset the 26th-ranked team of Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson, 8-2. Kohlloeffel and Gruendler are 10-0 in dual match play as a duo and Kohlloeffel is 17-0 overall in doubles.
A native of Herne, Germany, is now 19-2 this season and 11-0 in dual singles matches. He is currently riding an 11-match win streak.
UCLA (9-2) travels to rival USC's home courts this Friday, Mar. 9, for a non-conference dual match.
This is Kohlloeffel's fifth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor as a singles player and third this season. He has also won once as a doubles team with Gruendler. It is the sixth weekly honor all-time for UCLA.
