NCAA INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Three members of the Washington State University track and field team will be competing at the 43rd Annual Men's NCAA Indoor Championship and the 25th Annual Women's Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, at the Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville...all three Cougars have competed before: Tyson Byers (2005, tied 10th pole vault), Diana Pickler (2004, 12th pentathlon and 2005, 10th pentathlon), and Julie Pickler (2006, 2nd pentathlon and 2005, DNF pentathlon)...results will be posted at

NATIONAL TEAM RANKINGS: The Cougar women's team is ranked tied for 21st in the Trackwire Women's Top 25 ( this week...WSU men are not ranked...Pac-10 women's teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 include: 1. Arizona State, 7. Stanford, 16. UCLA, 21. Washington State, 21. Oregon, 21. USC...Pac-10 men's teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 include: 6. Stanford, T12. Washington, T12. Oregon, T12. Arizona, 20. UCLA...the Cougar women are ranked 20th in the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll released March 6, 2007.

DANDY DOZEN RANKINGS: A trio of Cougars are ranked in Trackwire Online's Dandy Dozen lists, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event...All-American multi-events specialists Diana Picker (2nd pentathlon) and Julie Pickler (7th pentathlon), are ranked this week as is Tyson Byers is not ranked in the men's pole vault.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 34th season with the Cougar track program; 13th year as a head coach, 12th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...volunteer coaches included former WSU All-American pole vaulter Tamara Diles, Bob Frey and Luan Weeks.

Pole Vault - All-American Tyson Byers (senior, Spokane, Washington)

  • PR pole vault height of 5.40m / 17-8 1/2 is third best in school history, fifth place at 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships
  • Top indoor height is 5.37m / 17-7 1/4i, cleared at 2005 MPSF Championships in Seattle
  • Competed at 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships, tied for 10th (5.30m / 17-4 1/2i)

    Pentathlon - All-American Diana Pickler (senior, Sachse, Texas)

  • National leader in pentathlon in 2007 with 4,260 points
  • Holds school record in heptathlon of 5,855 points, set at 2006 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
  • 2006 - Missed NCAA Indoor Championships pentathlon with ankle injury; placed third at NCAA Outdoor Championships heptathlon with 5,757 points
  • 2005 - 10th in pentathlon at NCAA Indoor Championships (4000 points), finished 6th in heptathlon at NCAA Outdoor Championships
  • 2004 - 12th in pentathlon at NCAA Indoor Championships (3786 points)
  • 2003 - 27th in heptathlon at NCAA Outdoor Champs (was 6th after six events but fell during 800m); 4th in heptathlon at Pac-10 Championships

    Pentathlon - All-American Julie Pickler (senior, Sachse, Texas)

  • Holds school pentathlon record with 4,267 points set in 2006
  • 2006 - Second place in pentathlon at NCAA Indoor Championships (4267 points); finished 5th in heptathlon at NCAA Outdoor Championships (5,604 points)
  • 2005 - DQ in pentathlon at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships after fouling all three long jump attempts; finished fifth in heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (5,650 points)
  • Won the 2005 Pac-10 heptathlon title (overtook twin sister and first-day leader Diana Pickler to win with PR and NCAA AQ 5,569 points - fourth-best in school history
  • Has suffered with plantar fasciitis for several years, had surgery in November 2006 and did not train for six weeks
