Roxanne Clarke Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE senior Roxanne Clarke has been named
the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Feb. 26-Mar. 4,
Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Clarke, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, helped the 20th-ranked Sun
Devils to a major road upset of fourth-ranked North Carolina, 5-2, on
Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Playing in the No. 3 singles spot for ASU,
Clarke upset the nation's 80th-ranked singles player Austin Smith in
dominating fashion, 6-4, 6-0. She also teamed with fellow senior Kady
Pooler at No. 1 doubles to defeat North Carolina's ninth-ranked doubles
team of Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen, 8-4, and the Sun Devils captured the
doubles point by a 2-1 margin. Clarke and Pooler are currently ranked sixth
as a doubles team in the Fila Rankings.
On Sunday afternoon, Arizona State was unable to pull off another stunner,
losing 5-2 to the 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils in Durham, N.C., however
Clarke upset a second-straight ranked singles opponent during the match.
This time it was 77th-ranked Elizabeth Plotkin who fell to Clarke, 6-4, 6-3
at the third singles spot.
The Sun Devils are now 7-4 as they prepare to take the road again in two
weeks as they head to L.A. to take on USC and UCLA on Friday, March 16 and
Saturday, March 17 in two non-conference dual matches. Clarke has been a
rock in the middle of the lineup for the Sun Devils, going 8-2 in dual
This is the second career Player of the Week award for Clarke in singles.
She also won once last year as a doubles tandem with Pooler. All three of
Arizona State's Player of the Week awards have involved Clarke.
