Former Devil Bizuneh Selected USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week

TEMPE, Ariz. - Former Arizona State University track and field and cross country standout Fasil Bizuneh has been selected as the USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week the association announced Tuesday (March 6). Bizuneh, who recently qualified to represent the Americans in the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, Kenya, on March 26, led Team USA to a sweep of the North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Athletic Association Cross Country Championships in Clermont, Fla.
A former All-American for the maroon and gold, Bizuneh led a U.S. sweep in the men's open race, crossing the finish line in a course-record 24:46 to lead Team USA to the team title in the 8K event. The Americans finished first, second, third and fourth overall to accumulate 10 points and win the team title.
Bizuneh will now travel to Kenya for the world event and will join one current and one former Sun Devil in the championships. Current team member Kari Hardt will compete in the junior women's race while former ASU student-athlete Mary Duerbeck will run in the women's open race. The trio are the second, third and fourth members of the program to represent the U.S. in the world event after Amy Hastings was the top American and 20th overall finisher in the junior women's event in 2003.
