March 8, 2007
BERKELEY, Calif. - California sophomore forward/center Devanei Hampton was selected a finalist for the WBCA/Kodak All-America team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in cooperation with Eastman Kodak announced today. The 52 finalists, who were voted upon by WBCA-member coaches in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions, are now in the running for selection to the 10-member Kodak/WBCA All-America team.
In addition to Hampton, the other finalists from Region 8 include Stanford's Candice Wiggins and Brooke Smith, UCLA's Noelle Quinn, USC's Eshaya Murphy, and Arizona State's Emily Westerberg.
Hampton is one of eight sophomores among the finalists and the only one from Region 8. There is one freshman finalist, and the remaining 43 players are all juniors and seniors.
Hampton, from Oakland, Calif., became the first Golden Bear in program history to receive Pac-10 Player of the Year honors this season. She also was picked to the first-team All-Pac-10 squad, becoming only the third Cal player to twice earn the accolade.
Named a Street & Smith's preseason high honorable mention All-America selection and a Naismith Trophy preseason watch list member, Hampton came on strong in conference play, ranking second in league games with an 18.9 scoring average, while ranking first with an 8.9 rebounds per game average.
A two-time Pac-10 Player of the Week honoree in 2006-07, Hampton owns eight double-doubles this season, including five in her last nine games and has recorded double-figure points in 27-of-31 games this season. Over the last 11 games, Hampton averaged 22.1 ppg and 10.3 rpg and recorded at least 21 points nine times.
In all games in 2006-07, Hampton averaged 16.7 ppg (7th Pac-10) and 8.0 rpg (3rd Pac-10). She registered 11 games with at least 20 points, including six outings with at least 25 points (twice tallied a career-high 27 points). In the Bears' 72-57 triumph over No. 8 Stanford Feb. 4, Hampton tallied 22 points and a season-best 14 rebounds, helping her team snap the Cardinal's 17-game winning streak and 50-game home Pac-10 winning stretch.
Hampton became the 10th freshman ever to earn first-team Pac-10 accolades last season, having paced Cal in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg). Over the summer, she was named to the USA Under- 20 National team.
The Kodak/WBCA All-America team for NCAA Division I will be announced at the Kodak/WBCA All-America team press conference at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center on March 31, 2007, at 9:45 a.m. (ET) in Cleveland, Ohio.
