Swimming Opens Up NCAA Championships

March 8, 2007

Junior Whitney Hentzen swam a personal best in the 500y free and USC's 400y medley relay qualified for the final (though it was ultimately disqualified in the evening swim) on the first day of the 2007 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis on Thursday (March 8).

The quartet of sophomores Kristen Lahey and Rebecca Soni, junior Emily Goetsch and sophomore Rachael Waller earned a berth in the championship final of the 400y medley relay after posting a season-best 3:37.54 in prelims. But in the final, the foursome of junior Hayley McGregory, Soni, Lahey and Waller saw their effort dashed because of a DQ.

Hentzen posted a personal best in the 500y free in 4:46.21, good for 21st. Junior Brittany Allen, like Hentzen making her NCAA debut, was 34th in the 500y free in 4:49.41. Waller was 57th in the event (4:54.57) while Goetsch was 64th (4:57.59).

Sophomore Katy Houston was 37th in the 200y IM (2:01.66), Lahey was 53rd in the 50y free (23.23) and junior Kim Popp was 34th in the 1-meter springboard (263.10).

The meet continues Friday and Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. (CST).
