SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sonny Garza's RBI single capped a three-run eighth inning and lifted San Jose State to a 6-3 win over Washington State Thursday evening in the first of a three-game series at Municipal Stadium.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 6-5 on the season while the Spartans improve to 11-5.
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the eighth, the Cougars put up two runs as Scott Suttmeier's sacrifice fly scored Zach Borba, who had started the inning with a double to left-center. Paul Gran followed with an RBI double to center, scoring Travis Coulter and tying the game at 3-3.
The Spartans answered in the bottom of the frame as Karson Klauer led off with a double and one out later came home on Donato Giovanatto's RBI double. Back-to-back singles followed, the last by Angel, to extend San Jose State's lead to 6-3. Scott Sobczak started the ninth on the mound for the Spartans and sent down the Cougars in order for his fifth save of the season.
It was a scoreless game through three innings as neither Cougar starter Wayne Daman Jr. nor Spartan starter Josh Amberson allowed a hit in that time. San Jose State jumped on the board first with solo home runs by Giovanatto and Marcus McKimmy in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-0 lead. WSU cut the lead in half in the sixth as Jared Prince's two-out, RBI single up the middle scored Suttmeier.
