Cal Baseball Shuts Out Kent State, 8-0, at Cardinal Classic
March 9, 2007
LOUISVILLE, KY. - Led by a two-home run, four RBI game by sophomore first baseman David Cooper; and an eight-inning, 10-strikeout effort from sophomore right-hander Tyson Ross, the California baseball team dominated Kent State, 8-0, Friday in the first game of the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. The Golden Bears improved to 8-10 on the year and the Golden Flashes fell to 3-8.
Cooper had his second, two-home run game of the season (also had two homers Feb. 26 at UC Santa Barbara) and provided Cal with four of its first six runs of the game. In the top of the first inning, senior third baseman Stephen Carlson had led off the game with a single to left field and scored on Cooper's home run down the left field line off of Kent State starter John Pacella (1-2, 4.0 innings, seven hits, six runs, two walks, five strikeouts). In the fifth inning, Carlson and sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler scored on junior second baseman Josh Satin's single to left field that was misplayed by Golden Flash left fielder Anthony Gallas. Cooper then followed with a two-run homer to right field.
Meanwhile, Ross (2-3) was outstanding in a second-straight outing, throwing 8.0 innings with three hits, no runs, no walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts. This follows a complete-game effort last Friday in a 1-0 loss at Stanford (8.0 innings, five hits, one run, one walk, eight strikeouts).
Cal added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the final 8-0 margin. In the seventh, freshman center fielder Brett Jackson had a two-out single up the middle and was scored on senior shortstop Brett Munster's RBI triple. In the eighth, Cooper walked and scored on sophomore right fielder Ryan Hanlon's double to left center field.
Besides Cooper's 2-for-2, two home run and four RBI day; Carlson Satin and Hanlon also had two hits apiece for the Bears.
Cal will next play host Louisville on Saturday, Mar. 10 at 3 p.m. EST, and then face Indiana State on Sunday, Mar. 11 at 10 a.m. EST.
