March 9, 2007
Sunnyvale - Sophomore Lauren Frankiewicz gave up just one run and struck out seven to lead the 22nd-ranked California Golden Bears to a 4-1 win over Iowa in the opening day of the NIST, hosted by San Jose State.
Cal (15-9) returns to action tomorrow vs. Eastern Illinois at 10:00 a.m., followed by Iowa State at 3:30 p.m.
In its afternoon affair with Iowa, the Hawkeyes had a chance to take an early lead in the second inning with runners on second and third with two outs. Frankiewicz, however, got out of the jam when she got Lindsey Diggman to fly out to Cal third baseman, Katie Vickers.
Cal managed to take advantage of its scoring opportunities in the bottom half of the second when Carly Winger connected for a two-out single that scored Julie Meyer, who drew an earlier walk, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Iowa tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning after Emily Nichols connected for a solo shot over the left field wall.
The Bears did not let the score remain tied for long, posting a two-run third inning to take a 3-1 advantage. Erika Racklin reached safely after an error by the pitcher, advanced to second base after Vickers notched a single to left field, before successfully stealing third base. Gina Leomiti reached on a fielder's choice allowing Racklin to score. Vernae Sevilla then picked up Vickers with her single to right field.
Frankiewicz held the Hawkeyes at bay in the top half of the fourth and fifth innings and received more run support from her teammates in the bottom of the fifth. Jessica Moore was inserted as a pinch hitter for Meyer and delivered a single to center field to plate Shannon Houston, who pinch ran for Leomiti.
Frankiewicz allowed just two more hits the rest of the way to collect her fifth win of the season.
