No. 6 Cal Opens Pac-10 Play With Shutout Over Oregon

March 9, 2007

BERKELEY - The No. 6 California women's tennis team won its Pac-10 opener in commanding fashion. The Golden Bears defeated Oregon, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The victory is the fifth shutout this spring for Cal (10-3, 1-0). The Ducks record fell to 8-3, 0-1.

'We played with a lot of confidence today,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'I think everybody played so focused on every court and that's probably evident by the score. Our goal for this segment in March is to treat everybody the same, play every opponent and every match the same.'

Every singles match ended in a straight-set win for the Bears. Cal changed things up a little bit with senior No. 25 Zsuzsanna Fodor playing on the No. 1 court for the third time this season and junior No. 4 Susie Babos competing on the second court. Fodor was the first Bear to finish, as she knocked off Dominika Dieskova, 6-0, 6-1. Babos was second to wrap up her match. The reigning NCAA singles champ beat Carmen Seremeta, 6-2, 6-3.

Junior Marion Ravelojaona clinched the match for Cal when she defeated Monica Hoz de Vila, 6-0, 6-2, on the No. 5 court.

Since the ITA Indoor Championships last month, freshman Nina Henkel has not lost a singles match. Currently ranked No. 16 in the ITA singles rankings, Henkel notched another victory against the Ducks. Playing on the No. 3 court, as she has all dual season, Henkel beat Ana Cecilia Olivos, 6-3, 4-0 (ret). Henkel is currently on a seven-match winning streak.

Juniors Cristina Visico and Stephanie Kusano both snapped their losing streaks at two on Friday. Visico defeated Claudia Hirt, 6-1, 6-1, while Kusano got the best of Anna Powaska, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, on the No. 3 court, the team of sophomores Claire Ilcinkas and Bojana Bobusic gave Cal its first win with an 8-3 victory over Hoz de Vila and Powaska. After the Ducks won the next doubles match, the third-ranked duo of Babos and Fodor clinched the opening point, defeating Olivos and Dieskova, 8-5. The match was tied at four when Babos and Fodor won the next four of five games to gain the win.

The Bears return to the courts on Sunday, March 11, when they host Loyola Marymount at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center.
