Stanford Blasts Sacramento State, 8-0

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 12/13 Cardinal softball team continued its success at the Stanford Classic, run-ruling the Sacramento StateHornets in the team's second game of the tournament. Stanford posted 12 hits, including five for extra bases, to pullout the 8-0 win. Stanford improves to 18-5 on the year, while Sacramento State falls to 4-10.
A homerun by freshman Rosey Neill put the Cardinal on the board in the second inning. Neill went deep to right fieldwith her third blast of the season to lead off the inning and put the Cardinal up 1-0.
In the third inning, Stanford used three hits, including a double by Maddy Coon, to score two more runs. JackieRinehart led off the inning with a slap single to shortstop and Michelle Smith was hit by a pitch on the next at bat. Coonthen slammed her double to right and scored Rinehart. Neill followed with a hit to left to easily score Smith, andStanford increased its lead to 3-0.
Stanford continued to build its lead in the fourth, opening the inning with four straight hits. Tricia Aggabao notchedher fourth double of the season to lead off and senior Lindsay Key followed with a single to left to bring in therun. Consecutive singles by Alissa Haber and Rinehart loaded the bases and Smith hit a sacrifice flyto center to score Key. With two out, Neill reached on an error and Haber scored on the play.
Stanford finished off the Hornets in the fifth inning, scoring two runs to take a commanding eight run lead.Shannon Koplitz drew a lead-off walk and, with one out, Key hit a ball off the top of the centerfield fence. Key came in for her first double of the season and Koplitz scored easily. Haber doubled to left onthe next at bat to score Key, and Stanford finished the fifth with the necessary eight runs. The Cardinal held theHornets scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, and picked up its sixth win by the eight-run rule this season.
Neill led the team with two hits and three RBI, while Key notched her first two RBI of the season. BeckyMcCullough earned her sixth win in the circle and struck out a season-high six batters.
Stanford continues play at the Stanford Classic tomorrow afternoon. The squad will take on the San Diego State Aztecsat 2 p.m. before meeting the Loyola Ramblers at 4 p.m.
