Cal Shuts Out Stanford

March 10, 2007

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four with a 7-0 shutout against Stanford, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears won five of the singles matches in straight sets. Cal improved its record to 7-4, while the Cardinal dropped to 3-8.

'We played our hearts out today,' Cal head coach Peter Wright said. 'Our three seniors, Tyler Browne, John Pettit and Daniel Sebescen, did a tremendous job. It's great for them to have this last home win over Stanford. They were the heart and soul in this effort today.'

The two toughest battles of the day in singles came on the top two courts. On the No. 1 court, Pierre Mouillon defeated Richard Wire, 7-6, 7-6. Neither player led by more than one game in either set. On the No. 2 court, Browne beat Erick McKean, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0. He trailed 5-3 in the first set, but rallied to win the next four out of five games to take the set. After losing the second set, Browne won the third-set tiebreaker to win the match.

Freshman Kallim Stewart earned the match-clinching victory with a win over Jeff Zeller, 6-4, 6-4. Finishing right before Stewart was sophomore Eoin Heavey, who got the best of Paul Morrissey, 6-1, 6-3.

The first singles win of the day came on the sixth court where junior Ken Nakahara handled Dave Ryan, 6-1, 6-1.

Sebescen recorded his first singles win of the dual season with a victory over Kevin Kaiser on the No. 3 court, 6-3, 6-3.

The Bears got started winning two of the three doubles matches. On the No. 1 court, Browne and Pettit jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Blake Muller and Kaiser. With the Cal duo leading 5-2, Browne and Pettit went on to win the next three games to take the match, 8-2.

Sophomore Geoff Chizever and Heavey wrapped up the doubles point for Cal on the third court, as they defeated McKean and Zeller, 8-4. Chizever and Heavey held leads of 4-1 and 5-2, before the Cardinal tandem came back to cut the lead to one. The Bears took the next three games to win the match.

Cal heads to Pebble Beach next weekend where it will square off against Southern Methodist Saturday, March 17, and USF Sunday, March 18.
