Elaine Breeden Leads Stanford's Saturday Qualifiers At NCAA Championships

Minneapolis, Minn. - Elaine Breeden was the top qualifier during prelims of the 200 fly on the third and final day of the 2007 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. Breeden clocked a pool record time of 1:54.24 to lead five Stanford swimmers that reached Saturday evening's finals session in individual events with their performances during the prelims. The sixth and final session of the three-day meet is scheduled to begin at 7 pm, CT.
Caroline Bruce (200 breast, 2:10.96) and Julia Smit (200 back, 1:55.24) will join Breeden in championship finals after taking fourth and fifth in their respective prelim events. Brooke Bishop will swim in the consolation finals of the 100 free after tying for 10th in prelim action with a time of 49.06, while Laura Wadden reached an NCAA consolation finals for the first time in her career after getting the 16th and final spot in the 200 fly with a 1:58.70 mark.
Stanford has also qualified for the consolation finals of the 400 free relay after a team of Smit (49.93), Breeden (49.29), Madeline Rovira (49.90) and Bishop (48.79) took 10th in the prelims.
Four additional Stanford swimmers - Morgan Hentzen (#18, 16:23.85), Lauren Costella (#30, 16:28.19), Elizabeth Durot (#36, 16:32.76) and Desireé Stahley (#39, 16:33.37) - are entered in the 1650 free that will be swum as timed finals prior to the other finals events.
Smit, Breeden and Bishop will all be swimming in the championship finals of an individual event for a third consecutive day as all three are looking to capture their first NCAA crown.
Shana Karp was 12th in the prelims of the platform diving with 258.50 points but will not be part of the eight divers competing in the finals of the event.
Other swimmers competing for the Cardinal in Saturday's prelim session included Andrea Axtell (36th, 1:59.49) in the 200 back; Rovira (33rd, 49.91), Nilasha Ghosh (62nd, 50.89) and Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy (64th, 51.00) in the 100 free; and Whitney Spence (41st, 2:02.72) in the 200 fly.
Other top individual finishers in Saturday's prelims besides Breeden were Florida's Gemma Spofforth (200 back, 1:54.42), Arizona's Lacey Nymeyer (100 free, 47.50, pool record), Wisconsin's Yi Ting Siow (200 breast, 2:09.95) and Texas' Jessica Livingston (platform diving, 350.20 points).
Auburn was the top prelim qualifier in the 400 free relay when a team of Kara Denby (48.19), Melissa Marik (49.16), Emile Ewing (49.08) and Emily Kukors (48.40) checked in with a pool record time of 3:14.83.
