No. 12/13 Stanford Slips By San Diego State, 4-3
March 10, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - Junior Michelle Smith led the No. 12/13 Stanford softball team to its third win of the Stanford Classic today, notching a team-high two hits and three RBI. The Cardinal won its fourth-straight contest and improved to 19-5 on the season, while the Aztecs fell to 13-11.
In the first inning, the Aztecs quickly put two runners in scoring position, after two hits and a successful sacrifice bunt. The Cardinal posted two quick outs, however, to hold the Aztecs off and keep the game scoreless.
The Cardinal took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with two runs on two hits. Freshman Alissa Haber led off with a single to right field, and was replaced at first base by Jackie Rinehart when the Cardinal senior reached on a fielder's choice. Maddy Coon drew a walk to put runners at first and second, and with two outs, Smith blasted a double to the warning track in left center field to score Rinehart and Coon.
The Aztecs pulled within one with a run in the top of the second. Monica Alnes singled down the right line to start the inning. On the next at bat, Taryin Casillas doubled down the opposite line, but a quick play by Rinehart in left field held the runner at third. Lindsey Marquez followed with a bunt to Missy Penna, but the Cardinal pitcher's throw to the plate wasn't in time to get Alnes. With runners at the corners and no outs, the Stanford defense pulled together and picked up three-straight outs, including a tough catch by Lindsay Key at shortstop, to leave the Aztecs stranded.
Coon drilled a homerun over the left center field fence in the third inning to take back the two-run Cardinal lead. The lead off blast was Coon's third homerun of the season and the 12th of her career.
The Aztecs made a comeback in the fifth inning, tying the game at three with two hits. Brittany Knudsen was hit by a pitch to start things off for SDSU and Tamani Wells doubled to put two in scoring position. Megan McDonald then cracked a two-RBI single that tied the game.
Stanford scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Haber walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a bunt single by Rinehart. Rinehart was out at second after a grounder by Coon, leaving runners at the corners. Neill grounded to third on the next play, and Haber was called out in a close play at the plate. Smith refused to let the Cardinal leave the inning scoreless, however, and blasted a single up the middle to score Coon.
The Aztecs put runners on to lead off both the sixth and seventh innings, but Penna struck out the side to end any thoughts of an Aztec comeback.
Penna registered ten strikeouts and collected her 12th win of the season.
Stanford will play Loyola Chicago in the ninth game of the Stanford Classic starting at approximately 5:45 p.m.
