Cal Races Strong in Intrasquad Races

March 11, 2007

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The defending national champion California Golden Bears held intrasquad races today. The University of Victoria stroke man was ill and could not compete, forcing Victoria to withdraw from the scheduled races.

The Cal Varsity 8+ defeated the Cal Second Varsity 8+ by 5.4 seconds, with the Freshman 8+ finishing well behind the other two squads.

'It was really disappointing that UVic wasn't able to race,' said men's head coach Steve Gladstone. 'We did the equivalent of intrasquad sprints. We were able to execute a full race plan and that was useful. Having an outside opponent would have been optimal, but it was a very successful dress rehearsal.'

The Bears next compete March 17 in Alumni Day events at T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center.

Results:1. Cal V8 5:43.82. Cal 2V8 5:49.23. Cal F8
