Cal Wins Races Against Victoria and Saint Mary's College

March 11, 2007

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The defending national champion California Golden Bears defeated the University of Victoria and Saint Mary's College to begin the 2007 season. Both Cal boats won by well over ten seconds.

The California Varsity 8+ pulled away early and never looked back, defeating Victoria's Varsity 8+ by 17.4 seconds. The Bears' Second Varsity 8+ defeated Saint Mary's College by 13.8 seconds.

'We had a good day, and I'm pleased with the results,' said women's crew head coach Dave O'Neill. 'There were some nerves heading into this first race, so this was certainly a step in the right direction. We'll get back to work this week and take some more steps forward.'

The Bears also held an intrasquad race between the Third Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+. The Third Varsity 8+ finished 21 seconds ahead of the Novice 8+.

Cal next competes March 17 in Alumnae Day events at T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center.
