Sixth-ranked Bears Put Another One In the Win Column

March 11, 2007

BERKELEY - The No. 6 California women's tennis team won its third-straight match with a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount, Sunday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears are in the midst of a five-match homestand and have won the first three matches in a decisive manner.

'Each doubles team and each individual went on the court today with an area of their game that they really wanted to get better at,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said.

Cal (11-3) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Only two of the five victorious Bears lost three games in either set. Senior Zsuzsanna Fodor made her second-straight appearance on the No. 1 court and defeated Pavla Mesterova, 6-3, 6-2. In the second set, Fodor and Mesterova were tied at two when Fodor won the next four games to take the match. The win by the reigning Pac-10 singles champion clinched the victory for Cal.

'Fodor really played a good match today,' Brogan said. 'That girl is a smart player.'

Sophomore Claire Ilcinkas earned the first singles victory of the day on the No. 6 court. Ilcinkas beat Audrey Bulkley, 6-0, 6-1. Right behind Ilcinkas, junior Stephanie Kusano picked up the second singles win as she took care of Tamara Tanner, 6-1, 6-0.

Juniors Marion Ravelojaona and Cristina Visico handled their opponents as well. Ravelojaona beat Serena Fermin, 6-2, 6-1, while Visico knocked off Elrien de Villiers, 6-1, 6-3.

The Bears started the day with three doubles victories to take the doubles point. On the No. 1 court, the team of Susie Babos and Fodor saw its 7-2 lead over Mesterova and Robyn Baker dwindle down to 7-6 before the third-ranked duo picked up the 8-6 win.

The doubles point was already decided before Babos and Fodor won their match. Ilcinkas and sophomore Bojana Bobusic clinched the point with an 8-2 victory over Bliss Nixon and de Villiers. Henkel and Ravelojaona won the first doubles match on the second court as they got the best of Tanner and Fermin, 8-2.

'I feel like we're definitely getting stronger at two and three doubles,' Brogan said. 'We got a little sloppy at one, but they closed it up really well.'

Cal continues its homestand tomorrow afternoon against Texas at 1:30 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Bears conclude the homestand next Saturday when they face TCU at 12 p.m.
