Smith's First Inning Homerun Leads Stanford to 2-0 Win Over UCSB

Stanford, Calif. - Junior Michelle Smith tagged a ball off the left field foul pole in the bottom of the first inning to lead theNo. 12/13 Stanford softball team to a 2-0 win over UC Santa Barbara today in the championship game of the StanfordClassic. Missy Penna pitched her third one-hitter of the season and the Cardinal finished the tournament with aperfect 5-0 record and claimed its third tournament championship of the season. The team improves to 21-5 on theseason, while the Gauchos took second place in the tournament and fall to 16-7.
Stanford had a rough start to the bottom of the first, as the first two Cardinal batters to come to the plate struckout looking. Freshman Shannon Koplitz reversed the trend, however, singling to left for the first Stanford hit ofthe game. Smith then pounded a homerun off the left field foul pole to put the Cardinal up 2-0. The homerunwas Smith's team-leading fifth of the season. The junior is now tied with Sarah Beeson ('02) for fourth on the Stanfordcareer homerun chart with 28.
Stanford had four hits in the game, including Penna's first double of the season. Rosey Neill added two walks to bringher season tally to 20 and Smith's pair of RBI brought her to a team-leading total of 26. Jackie Rinehart notchedthe remaining hit for the Cardinal with a single in the fifth inning. The Gauchos' only hit was an infield chopperby second baseman Christine Ramos during the first at bat of the game.
The Cardinal will take a week off to prepare for final exams, before resuming action at the Stanford Invitational IIon Saturday, Mar. 24.
