Softball Beats Notre Dame, Completes 6-0 Week
March 11, 2007
LAKEWOOD, Calif. - UCLA pounded out 11 hits, four for extra bases, as the Bruins (21-6) defeated Notre Dame by a final score of 9-3 on Sunday evening in Lakewood, Calif. The Bruins finish Long Beach State Invitational play with an undefeated 5-0 record on the weekend.
Notre Dame responded in the bottom of the second inning with two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead. The Irish capitalized on a walk and two singles in the inning to take the lead.
From that point, the Bruins took control, scoring three runs in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
The third-inning rally opened with a walk from Kaila Shull, who went to third base on a single by Lisa Dodd. Jodie Legaspi's single to right center scored Shull and advanced Dodd to third base. After Legaspi stole second, a wild pitch advanced both runners, plating Dodd for the go-ahead run. A Megan Langenfeld single scored Legaspi, giving the Bruins a 4-2 lead after two and a half innings.
Notre Dame put a third run across in the third inning, taking advantage of two walks and a third strike/wild pitch that would have recorded the final out of the inning, making the score 4-3.
In the fourth, Tara Henry drew a one-out walk, stole second base and scored on a Krista Colburn double to right. Dodd then followed with a two-out home run, her team-leading eighth of the season, to make the score 7-3.
UCLA put together another multi-run inning in the sixth, opening the inning with a triple down the right field line by Shull. An infield single from Legaspi was not enough to score Shull, but after Legaspi stole second base, a long single up the middle by Langenfeld made the score 9-3 in UCLA's favor.
Anjelica Selden got the win, her 11th of the season, striking out five and allowing three hits on the day.
UCLA resumes play on Tuesday with a 1 pm scheduled first pitch against Southern Utah at Easton Stadium before taking a 12-day break from competition for winter quarter final exams.
